Number 8 in Linda's Top 10 Favorite Things About a Trip to Alaska - Looking at the Ground!

Now don't laugh. I'm dead serious about this! Alaska and the Yukon have the most beautiful ground covers you will ever see! Around here, know what you see when you look down? Sand and clay unless you are in someone's manicured garden. Not in Alaska! Just about every inch is covered in a lush carpet of lichens, tiny flowers, mosses and colored rocks forming a botanical paradise! The most magnificent was on top of a mountain overlooking Salmon Glacier where we found a fairytale land which included ponds and dwarf pines making it remind me of a medieval movie set from Princess Bride! Other amazing displays included in this post are from Knick Glacier southeast of Palmer and Upper Gnat Lake on the Cassier Highway in BC. You can see that each has its personal palate of color!

You know, you're right! I'd never thought about it, but it is true; the ground is quite lovely! Too bad it will be covered up by snow all too soon! Actually, that is really pretty too since it doesn't melt and get all muddy!
